A roof is just a roof, right? Wrong… today’s complex rules and regs about saving energy, reducing carbon, conservation, health and safety etcetera mean a roof is much more than just a roof. We’ve been building new roofs, and mending old ones, for a quarter of a century. We take the time to keep up with the latest in materials science, insulation energy saving solutions and technologies. And we understand the legislation and planning guidelines that govern their use.
Here’s some useful information about roofing in Sussex.
Sussex roofing facts
While planning rules and regulations are the same across the UK, traditional roofing materials differ from county to county depending on the underlying geology. Older buildings in the Lake District are roofed in local slate. In Yorkshire you’ll find great slabs of thick sandstone used as roof tiles. Much of Sussex sits on soft, flint-filled chalk, no use for roofing, so most traditional Sussex buildings are roofed with fired clay roof tiles from places that sit on clay, for instance London.
Insulation – your roof’s best friend
Your roof is only half the story. Insulation is your roof’s best friend and there are some astonishing roof insulation materials on the market these days. In response to concerns about climate change, materials scientists are delivering insulation solutions that are lightweight, super-efficient and breathable for perfect air circulation and heat retention. Ask NASA… one of the insulation materials we use regularly was invented by them!
Glass technology has come on in leaps and bounds in recent years and specialist glass is becoming more common in everyday building projects. Some types of glass reflect heat outwards in the summer but retain warmth when it’s needed during the winter. There’s even 100% self-cleaning glass… superb stuff. We’ve worked on innovative, high spec, high end feature roof projects so we know what’s what if you have something a bit different – or challenging – in mind. We also have some great contacts for ranges of roofing tiles, slates, metal roofing, contemporary fittings and roofing accessories.
